Spur
The spur is a metal tool worn on a rider’s heels. It consists of a metal heel band (yoke, branch), neck and rowels. As a riding aid and as a punishment tool it is the oldest part of horse equipment, used as early as the La Tène culture era.
The origin of the spur is often explained through the wrapping of a simple spike around the foot so as to enhance the rider’s prod. In the Iron Age, the use of metal brought about the first spur. For centuries, the shape of a spur was changed to accommodate the needs of various cavalries and their gear.
