Kneeler
circa 1700
Kneelers were numerous in the inventories of households in Split in the XVII century. It consists of two parts: an upright cuboid with drawers and a horizontally placed kneeling bench. In terms of style, here we notice a Baroque feature in the cracked corners, while wood intarsia and ebony and ivory incrustation in the shape of floral motifs, curving tendrils and tulips, and the flying bird enhance this impression.
The combination of bright and dark together with the gilded strip that frames the trays - a decoration typical of the century, both produce a special decorative effect.
