Candleholder – Torac
1909
This is one of two gilded candleholders which belong to the collection of the Museum of the City of Split. They were both made by the Split woodcarver Šimun Carrara who studied Sculpture and Architecture at the Accademia di belle arti in Milan.
The candleholder is of a Neo Renaissance style. He carved and shaped in the supple wood a multitude of reliefs gradually intertwining around the stem. Motifs of winged angels, acanthus’, floral decorations and other creatures end into a round metal historicist crown.
