We are standing in front of the works of Mark Marulić, from Split, (born in Split 18. VIII. 1450, died in his home-town on 5. I.1524). He was born in one of Split’s aristocratic families, which called themselves Pečenić in Croatian, and from the 15th c. onwards - Marulus or De Marulis; there is little and at the same time unreliable information about his life.
In his hometown he attended the school of humanities run by Tadeo Acciarini, after which he continued his education in Italy. He spent his life in Split, travelling to Italy from time to time, and around 1510 he lived a sort of a hermit’s life in Nečujam on the Island of Šolta. In Split he served as an examinator of municipal duties, as a judge, an executor of wills. Owing to his literary work he became a central figure of the humanistic circles of Split.
